Momma always told me that some day I was 'gonna burn if I didn't shape up'. Well, this morning it happened. Our church caught on fire. I'm pretty sure it was because of me and my attitude this morning about teaching nursery. Not that I don't love nursery--cause I really, truly do. It's just that my back is still really hurting and my very best assistant wasn't going to be there.
So I guess those supposedly 'empty threats' your mom used to make are more true than not.
Be afraid....be very afraid.
Just fyi, it was a small electrical fire and happened early this morning before the church was full of people. There was no real damage but because of the smoke we won't be holding meetings. We are trying to apply the scriptures to our lives in this experience.... and there "was much rejoicing heard throughout the land", and "in everything give thanks".

Apparently it's true!

"Oh my aching back!"
I'm getting old. There's just no way around it. I keep trying to convince myself otherwise, but the evidence is mounting and I'm afraid I am going to have to face the music.
This week I went to an early morning exercise class. At one point I felt a twinge in my lower back, and having experienced that before I knew I needed to protect my back with each movement. Well the next morning in an effort to do just that I totally blew it. I moved suddenly and while the rest of my body went one way my back stayed put right where it was.
So I have spent the rest of the week eating ibuprofen like breath mints, sitting on a heating pad and hobbling around like a 90 year old woman. I even had to hire my own personal Boy Scout to help me at the grocery store. (Good thing I happen to have a few of them around my house). I am making progress, but I don't think I'll be moving any furniture anytime soon.
And just for the record, I am not really THAT old--not like my siblings.
*wink* Love you guys!

A run with my boys.
My day got off to a great start--Travis, Jeremy and I did the Healthy Heart 5K at A&M this morning.
They both enjoy running so it was fun to get them involved. It was my second 5K. Now it wouldn't have been nice for me to beat them so I decided to just walk while they ran. Aren't I a nice mom? Actually I did jog about 1/2 mile but walked the rest. Sad, I know. Actually I'm not sure which is more sad, that I did that, or that I admitted that I can only jog 1/2 mile. Some day I WILL run the whole thing.
Travis forgot to bring his running shoes home from school so he ended up scrounging up a pair of Lynn's shoes that didn't fit right and weighed way too much for running, but he did it anyway.
I had several people mention how great it was to get the kids involved. (they were by far the youngest ones there, aside from the babies in strollers, and really they can't get any credit other than being cute). One lady told me that Jeremy was her inspiration to keep running when she felt like giving up. She was just behind him and she decided if he could keep running so could she.
I am so proud of them. Jeremy and I are already signed up for another run next week--maybe Travis will decide to join us, maybe he'll wait for awhile. But I am pretty sure he's gonna be back out there with us again. And maybe by then he won't be able to lap his mom!

Insomnia
I really don't think insomnia is the right name for it. It needs something more like, "Stupid Time That Makes Me Crazy" or "Idiotic Nights of Hair-Pulling Frustration". Those seem to hit the mark more appropriately for me.
I've had trouble with insomnia off and on for several years and it seems I'm in another lovely cycle of it. Some nights I lay there in the dark trying not to toss and turn too much and wake Lynn hoping desperately that I will eventually fall back asleep. Most nights I get up and read, sometimes I get on the computer or watch tv. Some nights I do housework. Tonight I have loaded the dishwasher, cleaned out the fridge, folded laundry, started another load, written some thank you notes and taken out the trash. Sadly, that's more productive than I was all during the day yesterday. So now I here I sit, wide awake of course, wondering if the vacuum would wake everyone up? Maybe I'll go bake something....

Happy Birthday to my Missionary
This is weird. Today is my son's birthday and I have no way to celebrate it with him. I'm not sure what to make of it all. This is the first time one of my kids has been away from me on their birthday and it's making me a little sad. Not to mention the fact that he is now TWENTY years old. (Of course I had him when I was 13).
So I'm feeling a little nostalgic for my little boy--the one who lived in his cowboy boots with his shorts all summer long. The same one who rode his imaginary horse Bocco and played with his imaginary friends the "bad guys". The little guy who was chased by a rooster on his second birthday and would ask me if he 'made my heart hurt' when he was naughty. The same one that would spend hours in front of his video games, or track mud into the house after mudding with his friends. Even the same one I had to literally drag out of bed for early morning seminary.
I'm so proud of him and who he has turned out to be and what he is doing, but this momma would like just one rib-crushing hug from her boy today.
Happy Birthday Cowboy!
