The Big Apple

On Saturday we decided to make a trip into the city. Heidi had been to NY with us two years ago when we were here for the AAA meetings, but the boys had no idea what to expect from NYC. We figured if we were going to initiate them, best to just toss them into the fray and come what may, so we took them to Times Square.

Rather than trying to drive in on our first visit we caught the train in Norwalk and rode in from there. It was about an hour train ride, which wasn't too bad except that the car we chose to sit in didn't have any air conditioning. It was awfully warm in there.

I don't think anything we could have told them would have prepared them for Times Square. I think a picture says a thousand words, don't you?



We wandered aimlessly for several hours until dinner time, then went to see the Phantom of the Opera. It was their first time to see a Broadway show and it was just as fun for me to watch them see the show as it was to see the show myself. The Phantom was absolutely amazing! We had seen the traveling production, but the stage set was much more elaborate on Broadway. Really great night.

Made for a very long night by the time we rode the train back and then drove to Redding, arriving here at about 1:30 this morning. Waking up for 9am church was a bit challenging.

Our first day in our new ward was really positive. People were very friendly, introduced themselves, make us feel welcome, and we were even invited over to dinner with one family. There is an obvious warmth in the ward, and I am looking forward to our year here.

Here's a crazy idea

A new post on my blog. I know it's out there. Brace yourself.

I'm going to try and be more consistent in blogging our stay here in Connecticut. I have to say that after my first day or two of driving on these crazy roads, up and down, turns without signs, trees blocking any view, and being lost so many times I was resigned to just hang up my car keys and stay put in my house for the next year. Certainly it would be easier than spending my year in tears of frustration because I can't navigate even two miles to my house.

But necessity is the mother of invention right? Well okay, I didn't invent the map, but I did pull one out, study it, make a plan, and off I went. And I'm very proud to announce that I made it to four errands without even one wrong turn!

Things are starting off great. Tomorrow we head into NYC for the day. Thankfully Lynn will be driving on this trip. Can't wait to take the boys to Times Square and to see a Broadway show.

Life is good. Couldn't be more content with our decision to come here. I feel good things are in store for our family.
